What if recovery is something you could practice?

You're probably very good at being “on.”

Most of us are.

Wake up.

Check the phone.

Think about the day.

Coffee.

Drive.

Work.

Solve problems.

Answer messages.

Take care of everyone else.

Handle the next thing.

And then the next thing.

Eventually you get home.

Sit down.

Maybe pour a drink.

Turn on the television.

Scroll.

And somewhere along the way you're supposed to…

relax.

Except sometimes your body doesn't seem to get the message.

Your mind may know the day is over.

Your physiology may still be acting like it isn't.

So here's an interesting question:

What if recovery isn't simply something that happens when you stop working?

What if it's a state your nervous system has to actually enter?

That's why I use NuCalm.


Being Still Isn't Necessarily the Same as Recovering

You can lie on a couch while your mind races.

You can sit through dinner thinking about tomorrow.

You can go on vacation and spend the first three days checking email.

You can lie in bed completely exhausted…

…and somehow still be wide awake.

Most people have experienced some version of this.

The activity stopped.

But you didn't.

That's because your nervous system doesn't have a simple ON/OFF switch.

Your brain and body are constantly interpreting what's happening around you and adjusting physiology accordingly.

Heart rate.

Breathing.

Muscle tension.

Attention.

Alertness.

Digestion.

Sleep.

Hormonal signaling.

Your body is continuously deciding:

What does this moment require from me?

Sometimes the answer is action.

Sometimes the answer should be recovery.

The problem is that modern life gives us a remarkable amount of practice doing the first…

…and surprisingly little practice doing the second.


Your Body Has More Than One Gear

You may have heard people talk about the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

They are branches of your autonomic nervous system.

A simplified way to think about them is:

Sympathetic activity helps mobilize you.

Ready.

Alert.

Respond.

Perform.

Deal with the problem.

Parasympathetic activity plays an important role in restoration.

Digest.

Conserve.

Recover.

Return toward baseline.

You need both.

The goal isn't to eliminate sympathetic activity.

That would make no biological sense.

Stress isn't the enemy.

The ability to respond to stress is essential.

The important question is:

Can you come back?


Think About a Gazelle

A gazelle sees a predator.

Everything changes.

Heart rate.

Blood flow.

Muscle activation.

Attention.

Energy availability.

The animal runs.

Hopefully, it survives.

And then something remarkable happens.

When the threat is gone…

the response ends.

The animal returns toward baseline.

Humans possess that same fundamental capacity.

Except our predators have changed.

The mortgage doesn't disappear after ninety seconds.

The difficult relationship isn't eaten by a lion.

Your inbox regenerates overnight.

Your phone can deliver another problem while you're sitting on the toilet.

And your brain can create a stress response over something that happened yesterday…

or something that might happen next Thursday.

We became very good at extending the threat.

Which makes recovery increasingly important.


So What Is NuCalm?

NuCalm is a neuroscience-based relaxation system designed to help create conditions associated with a shift away from heightened arousal and toward a deeply relaxed state.

The system combines several components.

You listen through headphones to specially designed neuroacoustic audio.

You wear an eye mask to reduce visual input.

For Some People, That's Harder Than It Sounds

I see people who are remarkably capable.

Business owners.

Parents.

Professionals.

Athletes.

Caregivers.

People carrying enormous responsibility.

They can solve problems all day long.

But ask them to sit quietly for twenty minutes…

and suddenly we discover something interesting.

They've forgotten how.

Or maybe they never learned.

That's not a character flaw.

It's training.

You become good at what you repeatedly practice.

If you practice urgency twelve hours a day…

your nervous system becomes very familiar with urgency.

So here's the question that fascinates me:

What if we practiced the opposite?


What if relaxation isn't just a feeling?

When people hear “relaxation,” they sometimes imagine something indulgent.

Spa music.

Candles.

A massage.

A day off.

And those things can be wonderful.

But physiologically, recovery is not frivolous.

Your body performs important work when demand decreases.

Muscle tension can change.

Breathing can change.

Cardiovascular demand can change.

Attention changes.

Sleep pressure and restorative processes have an opportunity to emerge.

The autonomic nervous system continually adjusts the balance between mobilization and restoration.

So when I give someone twenty or thirty minutes of deliberate downshift…

I don't think of that as wasted time.

I think of it as part of the treatment environment.


What Does the Research Say?

This is where I want to separate an interesting technology from exaggerated marketing.

There is a large scientific literature surrounding stress physiology, sleep, autonomic regulation, relaxation and neuroacoustic approaches.

The research specifically evaluating NuCalm itself is much smaller.

That's important.

Published clinical research has examined NuCalm in settings including dental procedures, surgical recovery, cancer care and athletic recovery, with findings suggesting potential effects on anxiety, relaxation and physiological stress markers.¹ ² ³

Some of those studies are preliminary.

Some involve relatively small groups.

And some research surrounding the technology has industry involvement.

So I'm not going to tell you that NuCalm has been proven to “reset your nervous system.”

That's a bigger claim than the evidence currently supports.

But I will tell you this:

People can experience profound changes in subjective relaxation during a session.

And when I have a safe, noninvasive way to create a period of deliberate recovery inside a treatment visit…

I find that clinically interesting.


Because I've Watched People Try to Relax

This may sound funny.

But telling someone to relax is often completely useless.

“Try not to think about it.”

Great.

Now they're thinking about it.

“Take some deep breaths.”

Now they're monitoring their breathing.

“Meditate.”

Now they're wondering whether they're meditating correctly.

Sometimes the effort to relax becomes another task to perform.

NuCalm removes much of the performance.

You don't have to be good at it.

You don't need experience.

You don't need discipline.

You don't even have to believe in it.

Just lie back.

Put on the headphones.

Close your eyes.

And notice what happens.


And That's Why I Like It

I can explain autonomic physiology for twenty minutes.

I can talk about stress.

I can talk about recovery.

I can tell you that you should sleep more.

I can suggest meditation.

I can tell you to take time for yourself.

You've probably heard all of that before.

But there's something different about giving your body an actual experience.

What if instead of talking about recovery…

we let you experience it?

That's NuCalm's job in my office.


Now Remember IHHT

This is where the pieces start becoming much more interesting.

IHHT deliberately exposes your physiology to changing oxygen conditions.

Lower oxygen.

Respond.

Recover.

Lower oxygen.

Respond.

Recover.

It's a controlled physiological challenge.

NuCalm approaches the problem from the other direction.

IHHT asks your body to respond.

NuCalm gives it an opportunity to downshift.

Challenge.

Recovery.

Challenge.

Recovery.

You need both.


Because More Stress Isn't the Goal

This is an important distinction.

There's a growing fascination with hormesis.

Cold plunges.

Saunas.

Fasting.

Hard workouts.

Altitude.

Breath holds.

Push harder.

Do more.

Become resilient.

And those interventions can be useful.

But eventually you have to ask:

Resilient for what?

The goal isn't to accumulate as many stressors as possible.

The goal is to become better at responding appropriately…

and then recovering.

Otherwise, we're just adding another demand to a system that may already have plenty.

That's why I don't think IHHT makes complete conceptual sense without talking about recovery.

And it's why NuCalm makes so much sense beside it.


Where Does the Adjustment Fit?

Right in the center.

That's important.

The Muhr Method didn't begin because I wanted to create a relaxation center.

It began with chiropractic.

I have spent nearly three decades using my hands to change movement and mechanical input into the nervous system.

That remains the core of what I do.

But eventually I started asking:

What happens after the adjustment?

The body has received new input.

Movement has changed.

Muscles may have changed.

The nervous system has received an intervention.

What state do I want that person in next?

Do I want them immediately answering emails?

Rushing back into traffic?

Checking twelve notifications?

Or…

What if I gave their system a few minutes to simply receive what we just did?

That changed the way I thought about the end of a visit.


Treatment Doesn't Always Have to Mean Doing More

Sometimes treatment means an adjustment.

Sometimes it means stimulating tissue with shockwave.

Sometimes it means delivering light energy.

Sometimes it means creating a controlled oxygen challenge.

And sometimes…

it means reducing input.

Darken the room.

Cover the eyes.

Put on the headphones.

Stop talking.

Stop performing.

Stop solving.

Stop doing.

And give the body a chance to shift gears.

That's a very different kind of intervention.

But it has a job.


Can I Just Come In for NuCalm?

Absolutely.

Maybe you're stressed.

Maybe meditation has never worked for you.

What if your painful neck isn't only a neck problem?

What if the muscles around it are constantly bracing?

What if your movement isn't ideal?

What if an old injury needs additional tissue support?

What if your body isn't adapting to stress particularly well?

What if recovery isn't keeping pace with demand?

Maybe one of those matters.

Maybe several do.

And suddenly the question changes from:

“Which treatment fixes my neck?”

to:

“What does my body need in order to function differently?”

That's the question behind the Muhr Method.


You Don't Need a Stress-Free Life.

Good luck finding one.

You need the ability to respond when life asks something of you.

And just as importantly…

you need the ability to come back when the moment has passed.

Maybe that ability can be supported.

Maybe it can be practiced.

Maybe becoming better at recovery starts with actually giving your body repeated opportunities to experience it.

So perhaps the next time someone tells you to “just relax”…

there's a better question to ask.

Research

1. NuCalm as an adjunct for anxiety and physiological stress during dental and procedural care.
Published clinical reports and prospective studies have examined the NuCalm system in procedural settings, reporting reductions in subjective anxiety and favorable changes in several physiological stress measures. Existing studies are generally small, and larger independent controlled trials are needed.

2. Neuroacoustic and binaural-beat interventions for anxiety, sleep and cognition.
Systematic reviews of auditory beat stimulation and related neuroacoustic interventions have reported potential benefits for anxiety, sleep and cognitive outcomes, while also noting substantial heterogeneity in protocols and study quality. These studies evaluate the broader intervention category and should not be interpreted as direct evidence for the proprietary NuCalm system.

3. Autonomic regulation, relaxation and heart-rate variability.
A substantial physiological literature supports the relationship between autonomic state, cardiovascular regulation and recovery. Heart-rate variability is commonly used as a noninvasive marker of autonomic modulation, although it should not be interpreted as a simple “stress score” or direct measurement of sympathetic versus parasympathetic activity.
