What if you're not as “tight” as you think?

“My hamstrings are tight.”

“My hips are tight.”

“My shoulders are tight.”

“My neck is always tight.”

I hear some version of this all the time.

So naturally, people stretch.

Pull a little farther.

Hold it longer.

Do some yoga.

Buy a foam roller.

Maybe it feels great.

And then tomorrow…

you're tight again.

So here's an interesting question:

What if tightness isn't simply a flexibility problem?

What if your muscles aren't just pieces of rope that need to be stretched longer?

What if some of what you're feeling is actually your nervous system deciding how much movement it's willing to give you?

Now stretching becomes much more interesting.


Your Muscles Don't Make These Decisions Alone

Touch your toes.

Turn your head.

Reach overhead.

Your muscles obviously participate.

But they aren't operating independently.

Your brain and nervous system are constantly receiving information about joint position, muscle length, tension, balance and movement.

Specialized sensory receptors in muscles and tendons contribute to that information.

Your nervous system processes it and continuously adjusts muscle activity.

In other words:

Flexibility isn't purely mechanical.

It's neurological too.

And that's one of the reasons I use PNF stretching.


PNF Is More Than “Stretch Harder”

PNF stands for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation.

Terrible marketing name.

Fascinating physiology.

Rather than simply pulling a muscle into a stretch and holding it there, PNF techniques strategically combine stretching with muscle contraction.

I position you.

You gently contract against resistance.

Then you relax.

And we move farther into the available range.

Contract.

Relax.

Move.

We're using your own neuromuscular system as part of the process.


What if your body is protecting you?

Here's something worth considering.

Sometimes the sensation we call “tightness” may serve a purpose.

Your nervous system is continuously making decisions about stability and movement.

If an area doesn't feel well controlled…

If a joint isn't moving normally…

If you've been guarding an injury…

If your body has repeated the same movement pattern for years…

simply forcing more range isn't necessarily the entire answer.

Maybe the question isn't:

“How do I stretch this muscle farther?”

Maybe it's:

“Why doesn't my body want to give me that movement?”

That's a very different conversation.


Because More Flexibility Isn't Always Better

This surprises people.

The goal isn't to make every joint as loose as possible.

Some people already have enormous ranges of motion.

Their problem isn't getting farther.

It's controlling what they already have.

What I want is usable movement.

Enough mobility to do what your body needs to do…

combined with enough control to own that movement.

That's why I prefer thinking in terms of mobility rather than simply flexibility.

I don't want to create range for the sake of range.

I want to create movement your body can actually use.


Why Does PNF Work?

Researchers have been investigating PNF for decades.

Several neurological mechanisms have been proposed to explain why contraction followed by stretching can temporarily increase range of motion.

Older explanations focused heavily on reflex mechanisms involving muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs.

The current picture appears more complicated.

Changes in stretch tolerance, sensory perception, muscle-tendon behavior and neuromuscular responses may all contribute.¹

That's actually more interesting to me than the old simplistic explanation.

Because once again:

Movement isn't just about tissue length.

Your nervous system is involved.


What Does the Research Show?

PNF stretching reliably increases range of motion.

Systematic reviews have found that PNF can improve flexibility and joint range, sometimes producing greater acute changes than traditional static stretching depending on the protocol and outcome being measured.² ³

Research has also investigated PNF in rehabilitation and neurological populations, with improvements reported in outcomes involving balance, gait, function and range of motion in selected groups.⁴

Does that mean everyone needs PNF?

No.

Does increased range automatically mean improved health?

No.

But it gives me a useful tool when increasing or restoring movement is part of what we're trying to accomplish.


But Here's What Interests Me More Than Flexibility

Let's say I improve your hamstring flexibility today.

Great.

What happens tomorrow?

If your body returns immediately to the same pattern…

what did we really change?

That's the problem with thinking of stretching as the entire treatment.

Temporary range is useful.

But I want to know:

Can you use it?

Can you control it?

Can we reinforce it?

Does improving movement somewhere change what happens somewhere else?

And most importantly:

Why was the movement limited in the first place?

Now PNF becomes part of a bigger strategy rather than just a really good stretch.


Why I Use PNF Before the Adjustment

This is where it fits beautifully into the Muhr Method.

Imagine trying to adjust an area surrounded by muscles that are guarded, tense and resistant to movement.

I can still deliver an adjustment.

I've been doing that for nearly 30 years.

But eventually I started asking:

What if I prepared the body first?

What if we reduce some of the guarding?

What if we improve available movement?

What if we activate the muscles involved?

What if the body is already moving differently before I ever deliver the adjustment?

Now I'm not asking the adjustment to do everything.

I'm preparing the environment in which the adjustment occurs.


Prepare. Then Correct.

This became one of the basic sequences of the Muhr Method.

Prepare the body.

Then:

Adjust the body.

It sounds obvious once you hear it.

But traditional chiropractic often begins with the patient lying down and the doctor immediately adjusting them.

I've done plenty of that.

And sometimes that's exactly what's needed.

But when we're trying to create a larger change, I like another option.

Let me work with the nervous system and movement first.

Then adjust.

And notice what happens.


What Does It Feel Like?

This isn't passive stretching where you lie there while I pull on your leg.

You're involved.

I'll place you into a position where we can access the muscle or movement we're working on.

You'll contract against my resistance.

I'll coach you through it.

Then you'll relax.

And we'll move into the newly available range.

Many patients immediately notice a difference.

A leg moves farther.

A shoulder opens.

A hip feels freer.

Turning the head becomes easier.

Sometimes the change is surprisingly fast.

That's one of the reasons I like PNF.

You get immediate feedback from your own body.


And Then We Do Something With That Change

This is where PNF becomes much more useful to me than simply giving someone a stretch.

Once we've created more available movement…

what should we do with it?

Maybe we adjust.

Maybe we activate muscles.

Maybe we reinforce movement on the vibration platform.

Maybe we give you a movement to practice at home.

Because your nervous system learns through repetition.

One great stretch doesn't erase twenty years of movement habits.

Change requires repetition.

That's not a sales pitch.

That's biology.


Why Stretching Alone Sometimes Doesn't Last

You've probably experienced this.

Stretch.

Feel great.

Two hours later…

tight again.

That doesn't necessarily mean stretching “didn't work.”

It may mean stretching changed one piece of the system temporarily.

But the environment that created the pattern never changed.

Same posture.

Same movement.

Same joint restriction.

Same training.

Same stress.

Same neurological strategy.

So your body does what it's practiced doing.

It returns to what it knows.

That's why the Muhr Method doesn't stop at:

“You're tight. Let's stretch you.”

We're trying to create a new pattern.


PNF + Adjustment

This pairing makes intuitive sense.

PNF helps create available movement and alter neuromuscular input.

The adjustment introduces a precise mechanical and neurological input into the joint.

One prepares.

The other corrects.

And then we can reinforce what we've changed.

Prepare → Correct → Integrate.

Now we're not simply chasing a symptom.

We're creating a sequence.


And That's Where the Other Pieces Fit

Maybe stubborn tissue needs focused shockwave.

Maybe an injured or irritated area could benefit from photobiomodulation.

Maybe we want to challenge physiological adaptability with IHHT.

Maybe we want to deliberately create a recovery period with NuCalm.

Maybe we use vibration to activate and reinforce movement.

Each intervention has a different job.

PNF's job is beautifully simple:

Help prepare your body to move differently.

And then let's do something useful with that opportunity.


Can I Come In Just for Stretching?

Yes.

Maybe you feel stiff.

Maybe your golf swing isn't what it used to be.

Maybe you sit at a desk all day.

Maybe you're training hard and mobility has become a limitation.

Maybe you simply know that you feel better when someone helps you move.

Come in.

I'll look at how you're moving and we'll figure out what makes sense.

You don't have to enroll in the complete Muhr Method.

But don't be surprised if I ask:

Why is this area tight?

And:

What happens after we loosen it?

Because those two questions are where things start getting interesting.


What if stretching isn't really about stretching?

Maybe it's about information.

Your nervous system sensing where you are.

Your muscles responding.

Your brain deciding how much movement feels available.

You contract.

You relax.

We create a little more range.

Then we use it.

And repeat it.

Until something that once felt difficult begins to feel normal.

That's the goal.

Not simply touching your toes.

Not becoming the most flexible person in the room.

Giving your body more movement options—and teaching it how to use them.
